The Unapologetic Rat in a Knit Scarf

This piece has solidified its place as one of my personal favorites, largely because of the inherent contradiction it represents. On one hand, you have this incredibly warm, endearing figure bundled up in a heavy knit scarf; on the other, he remains unapologetically a rat. I made a conscious choice not to "sanitize" him. I love the way his "stupid" backwards ear and his textured, slightly gross rat foot ground the piece in reality. He isn’t a sanitized cartoon; he’s a genuine rodent who happens to be embracing a very cozy aesthetic.

Speaking of that aesthetic, the scarf itself is the undeniable star of the show. It’s impossible to look at that oversized, chunky wrap without getting some major Lenny Kravitz vibes—it's a high-fashion statement for a low-profile creature. Capturing the specific geometry of the knit stitches was a labor of love. I knew that if the texture didn’t look authentic, the entire illusion of weight and warmth would fall apart, leaving the scarf looking flat and unrealistic.

The story of its creation is a classic tale of fleeting ambition. I drew this little guy during one of those bursts of inspiration where I swore I would draw every single day for an entire year—a resolution that, predictably, lasted exactly four days before life got in the way. He was a product of that brief, productive window, sketched out entirely in a single sitting using a Sharpie pen. I remember the distinct anxiety of working with such a permanent medium; I was terrified that the shading would become too heavy or overworked, but looking back, I think I hit that delicate balance just right.
